Millennium Walkway Replacement Decking, Cardiff

Client: Cardiff Council

Encon Construction were awarded the contract to carry out works to Millennium Walkway, as part of the South East Highways Framework. The contract was carried out in partnership with our client, Cardiff Council, and the project team Faithful+Gould, Grays Consulting Engineers and WSP.

Works consisted of replacement of the existing timber decking system of Millennium Walkway, that wraps around the Principality Stadium adjacent to the River Taff. The existing timber decking was replaced utilising fibre reinforced plastic boards (FRPB), manufactured by Plura Polydeck. Polydeck’s FRPB product core is manufactured from 100% recycled plastic, and this project utilised around ¾ of a million recycled plastic bottles in the manufacturing process! Safety nets were fixed below decking by specialist abseilers to keep people safe when working on site.

Encon undertook a survey to ascertain all geometry prior to fabrication and installation. The street furniture was set aside during construction and was reinstated once the FRP decking had been installed. The existing timber grabrail on top of the parapet was sanded, stripped and treated.
