SGS Pegasus SEND School Extension

Client: South Gloucestershire Council

Our transformative expansion project at the SGS Pegasus School was designed to enhance Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) provision delivered on behalf of South Gloucestershire Council. Creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for an additional 40 students. By expanding the school’s capacity, the project directly addresses the growing need for specialist educational spaces while providing a high-quality learning environment that meets the diverse needs of students and staff.

The scheme was procured through the Procure Partnerships Framework, a procurement route dedicated to helping public sector bodies deliver high-quality, socially impactful projects. Collaboration was central to the project’s success, with the Encon team working closely alongside AtkinsRéalis, Craddys, Studio LIME Ltd, BJP Consulting Group Ltd, Intrado Consulting Engineers, and KJG Architecture, Inc.

Together, we took a proactive approach to overcome programme and commercial challenges while ensuring social value remained at the forefront. Our team’s dedication was recognised with the highest possible score on a recent Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) visit, along with a National CCS Bronze Award 2025, a clear testament to the project team’s commitment to quality, community engagement, and environmental responsibility.

The expansion was delivered over a 48-week programme with a committed team to ensure timely completion while minimising disruption to the existing school.

Key elements included:

·        486 sqm extension housing five new classrooms, each designed with internal group rooms, high-specification interactive whiteboards, ceiling-mounted projectors, sink units, and air conditioning.

·        Classrooms built with sound-reduction measures and sensory-informed colour schemes to create calm, supportive learning spaces.

·        Openable windows fitted with special restrictors for ventilation and safety.

·        Additional staff resource areas and welfare facilities with full accessibility in mind.

Externally, the project included:

·        300 sqm of new turf and a tarmac outdoor learning yard with low-level timber fencing.

·        Upgraded car park facilities including a new two-port EV charger.

·        Bat and bird boxes installed in response to the ecologist’s report, ensuring protection of local wildlife.

To maintain safety and security, the team worked within strict school operational requirements, ensuring all construction staff and supply chain members were enhanced DBS checked. Security upgrades included SALTO door access fob systems and improved fire exits.

The SGS Pegasus School Expansion delivers much more than new classrooms, it provides a high-quality, inclusive environment where students can thrive. It demonstrates how collaboration, social value, and sustainability can be embedded into construction delivery, leaving a positive legacy for students, staff, and the wider community for years to come.
